uk: price of bananas to rocket because of weak pound

The price of bananas is set to soar as the impact of the weak pound hits home. The cost of Britain's favourite fruit has increased by more than a third over the past year. And further price rises look likely, according to trade magazine The Grocer. Their report says bananas are particularly vulnerable to currency movements. A kilo of bananas has rocketed from an average 70p a year ago to 94p this week. With costs dollar-based and duty charged in euros, importers had no choice but to pass on higher costs. Suppliers Fyffes said this week they would raise prices again to offset the strength of the dollar against sterling.
